Summer Dance Forever: Amsterdam, Where the World Battles

Every August, Amsterdam becomes the centre of the street dance world for Summer Dance Forever, a festival of battles, workshops, theatre performances, and club nights. Dancers from across the globe gather at Paradiso, the festival’s home for the battles, to compete in Hip Hop, House, Popping, Locking, and Waacking.

The format is what makes it legendary. In the preselections, dancers get 45 seconds to impress three judges and earn a place in the Top 24. From there it is one versus one all the way to the Top 3 — and then the finalists battle the judges themselves in the famous Judge Battles. The judges do not just sit behind a desk; they step onto the floor.

But the battles are only half the festival. The same week carries workshops taught by the world’s top practitioners, theatre shows, and seminars on community and care — a reminder that street dance is a culture to study and protect, not just a contest to win.
